Privacy Policy

Speakaboo ("we", "our", "the extension") is a Chrome extension that reads webpages
aloud using text-to-speech (TTS) technology. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and your rights.
1. Data We Collect
Account data (if you sign in)
- Email address and display name, via Google Sign-In or email/password
- Stored in Firebase Authentication and Firestore (Google Cloud, USA)
Preferences
- Your chosen TTS provider, voice, speed, language settings, and karaoke mode
- Stored locally in Chrome storage and synced via Chrome Sync
Usage data (Premium users only)
- Number of characters converted to speech per month, used to enforce service limits
- Stored in Firestore, never shared externally
Subscription data (Premium users only)
- Subscription status, trial dates, and billing interval
- Managed by Stripe (Stripe, Inc., USA). We never see or store your payment card details.
Analytics events (authenticated users)
- Product usage events (e.g., "playback started", "provider switched")
- Linked to your account ID, stored in Firestore, used only for improving the product
- Never sold or shared with third parties
2. Webpage Text Sent to AI Providers
⚠️ When you use Cartesia, OpenAI, or ElevenLabs voices,
the text of the paragraph being read is sent to that provider's servers to generate audio.
We do not store this text — it is transmitted and immediately converted to audio.
Each provider has their own privacy policy:
The free Browser TTS option processes text entirely on your device —
no data leaves your computer.
3. Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect browsing history
- We do not track which websites you visit
- We do not read or store the content of pages you visit (we only transmit text to AI providers during active playback, as described above)
- We do not sell your data to anyone
- We do not use your data for advertising

5. Your Rights
You may at any time:
- Access your data via your Account page in the extension
- Delete your account and all associated data via Account → Delete Account
- Export your preferences by contacting us
- Opt out of AI voice providers by switching to the free Browser TTS option

6. Data Retention
- Account data: retained until you delete your account
- Usage counters: reset on the 1st of each month
- Analytics events: retained for 12 months
- Local preferences: cleared when you uninstall the extension
7. Children's Privacy
Speakaboo is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

8. Changes to This Policy
We will update this page and change the "Last updated" date for any material changes.
Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
